The Shack: A Book Review

William P. “Willie,” Young, The Shack, (Los Angeles, California: Windblown Media, 2007)
I’ve just finished reading a most exceptional book. It’s a story book. Written in such a way that, to read it, is a deeply life changing experience.

4 things are written on the book’s front cover; the title, “The Shack;” a subtitle; an endorsement; and the author’s name. There’s also a picture of the “Shack.” The subtitle is, “Where Tragedy Confronts Eternity.” This book is that. The endorsement is made by Eugene Peterson. Peterson is the author of THE MESSAGE paraphrase of the Bible. “This book,” he writes, “has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan’s ‘Pilgrim’s Progress,’ did for his. It’s that good.” The author’s name is William P. Young. You really need to get to know him before you read his book. You can. Go to the website – www.theshackbook.com .

Oh, by the way, there’s a Ladybug on the front cover as well. The things it portends are tragic and heart rending. The book is an emotional experience. I’ve been angered by events in its story. I’ve been hurt. It is, at the same time, a most pleasurable book. I’ve discovered a whole new aspect of what “Willie,” calls the “wastefulness of grace.” I’ve met God while reading “The Shack.”

It is, for sure, a thoughtful, reasonable book. Reading it you will be confronted with the greatest issues of life. Your preconceptions about life, and God, and humanity will be challenged. Mine were. The author is truly a student of life. He knows the Lord of life personally. He is wise. I am learning from this book, even now, as I reflect on its story.

“The Shack,” is a picturesque book. The imagery is well drawn with skillfully painted word pictures that will transform your perceptions of simple things as well as ultimate things.

This is one of those books I will never put away. Though it is a novel it will be, for me, a reference book. I suspect it will be for you as well if you read it.

You really should read it.

You’ll need to visit the website to find out how to get a copy.
